چکیده

The present work provides an analysis of the potential impact fossil-based Low Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF) for European aviation sector, with a time horizon to 2050. LCAF are crude-derived alternative kerosene, offering some Green House Gas (GHG) savings, and have been defined by ICAO as eligible fuels mitigating environmental aviation. A methodological framework evaluate EU technical production is developed, based on data crude utilization jet fuel in refineries, relevant carbon intensity reduction technologies, market prices, volumes. Two different baselines fossil-derived kerosene (CI) considered: global figure 89 gCO2e/MJ EU-27-specific one 93.1 gCO2eq/MJ. Three scenarios considering increasing levels CI then defined, taking into account current commercial availability most technologies. demonstrates that, even if could offer GHG saving opportunities, their possible impact, especially when compared ambition level set recent legislative proposals, very limited analysed scenarios, exception ambitious ones. At 2030, non-zero projected only higher scenario, ranging between 1.8% 14.2% share EU-27 (equal 0.6 4.75 Mtoe), depending considered Baseline CI. 2050, almost all project larger potential, 6.9% 22.2% (2.21 7.13 16.2% (0.58 5.2 Mtoe). additional costs also discussed, given relevance large-scale deployment these range 39 46.8 USD/toe.

Alternative Fuels In Aviation

During the last years, the aviation sector has been looking into alternatives to kerosene from crude oil, to combat climate change by reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to ensure security of supply at affordable prices. The efforts are also a reaction to commitments and policy packages. Currently, a wide range of possible fuel candidates and fuel blends are discussed in the triple ...

Hydrogen as Aviation Fuel: a Comparison with Hydrocarbon Fuels

Depletion of fossil fuels and environmental considerations have led engineers and scientists to anticipate the need to develop a clean, renewable and sustainable energy system. In general, they agree that in such a system hydrogen will be used as an energy carrier. One of the areas in which hydrogen will be replacing fossil fuels is air transportation, an area that has been under research for s...

Development and Evaluation of Alternative Aviation Fuels

There continues to be significant interest in the development, certification, and use of alternative (non-petroleum) aviation fuels. The motivation for this is driven by many factors, including the growing demand and reduced supply of petroleum-derived fuels, cost volatility, and desire for a reliable domestic fuel supply. In addition, the production of alternative fuels from renewable/biologic...

Experimental study of soot aerosol formation in swirl-stabilized flames of alternative aviation fuels on a path to sustainable aviation

Particulate matter (soot aerosol or carbon black) emissions from combustion systems have adverse effects on human health and the environment. Soot is a major contributor to the total radiation heat loss in propulsion systems. Soot aerosols in the atmosphere have significant positive radiative forcing that contributes to global warming because of strong absorption of sunlight by soot. As compare...
